But I got to seriously thinking about this AI stuff. Look, I admit it, Onya’s Apothecary is at least 90% AI generated from the text to the photo backgrounds. I have a very hard time selling myself. I can SELL YOU all day long. Me? Not so much. Blame it on the Recovering Catholic thing, I think that’s where it belongs. You’re never supposed to toot your own horn.

I think it looks and sounds great. WordPress AI even offers me different ‘tones’. I did ‘sympathetic’ and ’empathetic’ on most of Onya’s pages.

I did use it to try and spruce up the book blurbs. They didn’t come out too bad. I used a few of them. Then I got a free one from this place called New in Books. This is what they sent me:

The Heart of War is book #1 in the Of War Series of power packed adult novels.

In uploading new blurbs for books, I came across several old ones I didn’t know existed anymore and that, to my mind, should not exist. Whenever I undertake the task of changing a book in any manner, I change it on every site, in every format, at the same time.

Why?

Because my brain isn’t getting any younger so it’s best not to leave this stuff to chance.

In short, I tried AI on my books. Not the stories. NEVER EVER the stories. Just the blurb and stuff. That’s why I see it in these emails.

I went to the GooglePlay Store and downloaded ChatGPT just for kicks. I asked it to tell me about “The Heart of War” by author Lisa Beth Darling. Most specifically, I asked it to tell me the ending. I wanted to see what it came up with.

Wait. Hold on. I have to say that I was bowled over, just stunned and amazed, that this thing knew “The Heart of War”. It knows ME. It knows “Genesis”. I haven’t tried the other ones yet but I did manage to stump this thing. I asked it, back to back, for a short blurb for “Heart” and one for “Genesis”.

You have to check this out.

OK, back to “Heart”. Here’s the thread. This thing is freakin’ terrifying and utterly amazing.

Do you have ANY idea how many times I was asked by publishers to boil things down like this and couldn’t do it? If I had this thing I’d have been on the Best Seller’s List a long time ago.

This is like Schrodinger’s Cat in action. It has one foot in Oh Fuck That’s So Wrong and another in Damn That’s So Awesome!

It’s all in how you use it, I guess. Or, at least, that’s what ‘they’ will tell you.

My point is, please read those screenshots. Please get this damn thing and plug your good self and your books (or other works) into and see what it says ABOUT YOU.

‘Cause, DAMN it had a lot to say about ME!

This way, when these ego stroking emails come along you’ll spot them better. You’ll have a frame of reference for the words the AI uses and the way it ‘speaks’. One thing I noted is that, on the whole, this thing continually references Amazon and GoodReads more than other places. So watch for those two things within these emails especially if you’re in wide distribution.

If I had never held my nose, jumped in, and used the Word Press AI I wouldn’t be able to see this. It’s true. It’s rather sophisticated but it’s the same old scam they ran twenty years ago. It’s just in a new package that feels familiar, like a gift from an old friend. But it’s not.

Well, I’m off to do some “deep dives” with this thing. Should be interesting to learn about me. Seriously, I had no clue this thing would have anything about me or my books at all.

It’s kinda cool and kinda creepy.
