The Candle Shipping Nightmare

Not sure if this still true but Once Upon a Time the motto of the United States Postal Service used to be “We Deliver For You”.

HOW they ‘deliver’ seems to be open to interpertation.

Why, yes, yes, the box does say ‘FRAGILE’ all over it. I told you that in sister post to this one My Math was a Little Off.

Yep, not only is the box busted to shit…along with all the glass inside

It arrived 3 days late.

That box was packed nice! Everything was tight and it had a sheet of Styrofoam on the top and bottom. There’s no excuse for this…none. This box has been thrown about and stomped on more than once in its sad journey from CT to TX.

To add a bit of insult to injury, in that last post, I told you they were going to print a shipping label but the ‘woman’ behind the counter kept saying….sing it with me now…

“Not my job.”

You know, while she printed out the fucking thing as….oh wait…what? Oh yeah, PART OF HER FUCKING JOB!

Look at that box! WTF?

Well, I can clearly see why she repeatedly talked me out of the insurance. Can’t you?

Never again.

No way.

The United States Postal Service is a crappy joke and if I ever ship again I’ll find another, more responsible, carrier for my products. This is not the first time this has happened to me with USPS.

Even though my Return Policy clearly states “Not Responsible for Damage Done in Shipping” (Gee, I wonder why?) I feel horrible about this. Especially this one, this package was for a friend. Someone I literally grew up next door to. He’s assured me that the candles themselves are just fine and still usable. He even likes the scents. It’s just the glass that shattered to shit.

If that had been vintage glass I would be at the Waterford Post Office bounces that bitch’s head off the counter so fast! Arrest me. I don’t care. Just so long as you interrogate her about what is and isn’t her job after her concussion subsides.

I will send my friend some replacement candles in the near future but I’ll check out UPS.

Anyway, while I was up at the corner store today buying my daily cigs and two stamps for the AccessHealthCT renewal form. I told the nice gentleman who runs the place my sad tale of woe as I was handing over more money for the USPS.

He looked at me and said; “You make candles?”

I said; “Yes, I do.”

He said; “Would you like to sell some here?”

I said….well nothing at first…I was stunned. I almost asked him to repeat what he’d said. But the store is very friendly, I really like those guys and look forward to seeing them as part of my daily routine, and they do sell some knick-knacks by local artists. I had thought about asking them if they might possibly interested in one or two candles…

“Sure,” I said.

He asked about their sizes and I looked at the counter space, I think the smaller ones would probably work best and maybe one or two of these

For whatever reason, these are the “most popular” candles with scammers. The one that got my PayPal account closed was after the strawberry candles…ALL of them. The rest of them have all gone for this one. If I can sell them at the corner store I can get them off my site and maybe the scammers won’t be so tempted. I could also add a nice “SOLD OUT” watermark on them.

So another bad experience with the USPS could lead to an opportunity. I’ll take that. Especially because, after all the emails I sent out ‘testing the waters’ with local places like The Golden Owl, Pandora’s Box, Mystical Horizons, and Crisp Serenity (to name a few) not one of them could be bothered to get back to me.

Not a single one.

One of these places advertises itself as an Independent Book Store catering to the indie community and selling some cool shit along with the books. They are right downtown along with another store in that small list.

That’s ok, I was never One of the Cool Kids.

I would be very proud and happy to start the money-making part of my candle venture at the corner store. With nice people who like and support me.

Maybe, one day, I really could move into the still empty little store front down by the old school. Yeah, parking sucks, but I really like that little place. Lots of good childhood memories. A wonderful little candle and bath shop, with some books of course.
