Pip: Lisa Beth Darling ran a free book giveaway this week, and the results are in โ which means we get to talk about indie publishing strategy, alter egos, and the quiet dignity of a single paperback sale.
Mara: This episode follows one post from lbdarling recapping a Monday-through-Friday free campaign across her Kindle Unlimited catalog, and what she learned running it on zero budget.
Pip: Let's start with what actually happened โ the downloads, the surprises, and the debut of a certain someone named Loony.

Lessons from Free Week
Mara: The question here is whether a no-budget, last-minute free giveaway can still move the needle โ and what the results actually tell an indie author about her catalog.
Pip: She sets the stakes plainly: "I put absolutely no money into it. Very little time….face it, I was going to be FB at those times of day anyway, so what's a bit of copy/paste while I'm already there?"
Mara: So the upshot is that the campaign's cost was effectively zero โ the time spent was time she was already spending on Facebook, which reframes the whole exercise as optimization rather than investment.
Pip: And the returns on that near-zero investment are genuinely interesting. A Window to Magickal Herbalism pulled its highest download count ever โ a book she describes as having spent its life on life support on Kindle.
Mara: She's clearly moved by that one. The post says she hopes readers find it "everything I wanted it to be" โ which is a different register than the tactical recap surrounding it.
Pip: Then there's Cold November Rain, which she notes she may never have offered free before, and Christmas Eve on Olympus, which rarely goes free because it holds a $0.99 price point. Both made appearances this time.
Mara: And the one she calls her proudest result is a single paperback sale of Sins of the Father. One sale. She addresses the buyer directly in the post: "If you're out there…thank you! That little victory means the world to me."
Pip: One paperback sale as the emotional high point of the week โ which is either heartbreaking or a masterclass in recalibrating what victory looks like. Probably both.
Mara: The other thread running through all of this is Loony โ a pen name she's developing, kept deliberately mysterious. Loony landed in fourth place in her debut outing, with 45 downloads despite being locked out of roughly half her Facebook groups for most of the week.
Pip: Fourth place, new account, half the access, no budget. That's a respectable opening hand.
Mara: She closes with "Watch out, Lisa, here comes Loony" โ which suggests the experiment is far from over.

Pip: Zero dollars, one paperback, a pseudonym in fourth place โ indie publishing contains multitudes.
Mara: Next time, we'll see what Loony does with a full week's access. That should be worth watching.
