I know what its like to struggle and not know where to turn. It stinks. The wolves are always at your door if you’re lucky enough to have one. It’s distressing, disheartening, and dehumanizing.
My husband and I have worked hard just to make ends meet for the last 36 years while we care for our family. Even with two people working getting everything you need can be difficult.
The following is a list of places where those in need in New London County CT can obtain a variety of assistance, care, and services. There is information for infants, young adults, elders, disabled, those in recovery or seeking substance abuse assistance, those facing homelessness, legal assistance, domestic violence assistance, and of course, for families and children. The list contains information on food pantries and meals in the area as well. Many of the organizations below provide a variety of services so check them out. They have been categorized here by what I feel is their main focus but may not be all they have to offer.

To be eligible, applicants must be 65 years of age or older, be a Connecticut resident, be at risk of nursing home placement and meet the program’s financial eligibility criteria. To be at risk of nursing home placement means that the applicant needs assistance with critical needs such as bathing, dressing, eating, taking medications, toileting. The CHCPE helps eligible clients continue living at home instead of going to a nursing home. Co-Pay Assistance Program provides assistance toward the cost of Private, Medicare, Medicaid, and TRICARE insurance premiums, and treatment-related co-pays and co-insurance for prescription drugs, labs, scans, tests, etc. Award levels vary by disease fund.
Patient Aid Program provides a one-time $100 stipend to eligible blood cancer patients to help offset non-medical expenses.
Susan Lang Pay-It-Forward Patient Travel Assistance Programs provide assistance for treatment-related transportation and lodging expenses. Eligible patients receive a $500 grant.
Susan Lang Pre CAR T-cell Therapy Travel Assistance Program provides assistance for treatment-related transportation and lodging expenses for patients who are being evaluated to receive CAR T-cell therapy as either standard treatment or a clinical trial. Eligible patients receive a $2,500 grant.
Urgent Need Programs provide assistance for non-medical expenses including rent, mortgage, lodging, utilities, childcare, elder care, food, transportation, car repair, car insurance, phone service, and acute dental work related to treatment. Eligible patients receive a $500 grant.

Over the years, NATCAF has developed five different programs to support families and individuals with cancer — the Children’s Cancer Dream Network, the Breast Cancer Assistance Fund, NATCAF Kids, NATCAF Children’s Fund, and the National Cancer Assistance Military fund. Founded in 2004 by beverage executives who recognized a need to help employees with children who worked in food and beverage service operations at times of health crises and natural disaster. They discussed that children were impacted the most when an unexpected medical crisis, injury or death occurred and created CORE. Since the early days, the organization has grown to help food and beverage service employees with children in all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
CORE provides support in the form of a financial grant when an employee, spouse or child faces a medical crisis, injury, death, or natural disaster. An average grant is $2,400 and may cover rent/mortgage, utilities, prescription/ medical equipment costs, funds for basic necessities, childcare, expenses related to a funeral and more. CORE serves as a resource and benefit for operators across the country. Additionally, CORE provides employee engagement opportunities, partnership opportunities and resources for all organizations.

This program provides emergency financial assistance to Active Military, Veterans, Wounded Veteran and Gold Star families. This is based on needs that arise from financial hardships faced when a service member is wounded, facing multiple deployments, killed in action or suffering from injuries received in the line of duty. We also assist Gold Star families who have lost a loved one to the war or post war suicide resulting from complications from PTSD and/or other injuries. Our charter requires there is at least one child 18 or under currently in the home to be eligible for assistance. These payments can include lease, mortgage, insurance, car payments, utility bills, and some travel expenses. These payments do not include money for groceries, gas or direct cash paid to the service member or family.

The Community Housing Assistance Program helps young adults ages 18-24 that are transitioning from foster care to self-sufficiency. The program provides rental and tuition assistance through DCF. The case manager provides ongoing individualized support to assure a successful transition for the young adult.
